Avencore
Finn had done his best to stick to his usual routine after Laura left, giving the Shadows no reason to think he was in any way concerned about her welfare. Heâd gone for a jog, checked in at the grocery store to get the kidâs receipt from the clerk, and stopped at the Café for a casual breakfast, where heâd covertly watched Lauraâs taxi as itâd passed by on the way out to Karsengale. Heâd made himself sit there for another hour before returning to the inn.
That was as far as his patience would stretch.
It occurred to Finn he had two problems to solve. One: No other lodgings were available in Avencore or any of its closest townships for a hundred miles. Two: The Shadows assigned to watch him had a record of his night with Laura, which they might or might not have already relayed to Latham.
Two birds, one stone.
Finn checked his wrist unit and left lens to make sure they were linked and functioning, then set his gun to seventy-eight percentâenough to kill without the mess of blood spatter to clean up afterward. With a rapid rhythm of blinks, the vision in his left eye changed to pick up heat signatures. He saw a prone figure through the ceiling at the back of the inn. That would be Ms. Thane, still sound asleep.
Finn hoped she wouldnât mind that he left the door unlocked when he let himself out. It wouldnât be for long. The fog was thick enough to cut with a knife, but the lens, controlled by his wrist unit, automatically popped up a holographic grid of the street layout around him. The roadway was heated from underneath, but the mechanism had broken down a while ago, from the looks of things. It caused hotspots in his vision where the heating worked overtime while leaving the rest of the path cold.
The dilapidated house across the street registered three heat signatures, all clustered in a room upstairs. How disappointing.
Finn crossed the street, jogged up the stairs, and knocked on the front door, putting his hands casually behind his back. Good manners were the hallmark of a proper Hawk. He didnât hear the occupants rouse, but their heat signatures moved fast. Two of them armed up while the third stayed by the window facing the inn.
Finn hummed to himself as he waited for the two to make their way downstairs. Through the doorway, he saw one heat signature fall back behind a corner as the other approached the door sideways, a weapon in his hand. Adorable. Futile but adorable.
The door opened onto a very confused former soldier doing his best impression of a normal person. Finn gave him a sunny smile. âHi there, neighbor!â Then he raised his gun and fired.
The Hound fell back before his brain had registered he was dead. Finn pushed his way inside and closed the door as he dived sideways to avoid a shot from the backup. It scorched a hole in the reinforced door where his head had been a second ago.
